Osler-Rendu-Weber disease is also known as Familial Telangiectasia. It is a hereditary condition that predominantly affects the skin, the mucus membranes, the nervous system and the GI tract. In this disorder, abnormal blood vessels, or telangiectasias, develop in these areas. These blood vessels are more fragile than normal.
Causes of Rendu-osler-weber Disease
The cause of Familial Telangiectasia is a defect in the vessel wall. This defect leads to mechanical fragility of the vessels.
Signs and Symptoms of Rendu-osler-weber Disease
The symptoms depend on which area are affected. Repeated nasal bleeding may occur. Bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract may lead to black, tarry stools. Anemia with fatigue, rapid heart beat and exercise intolerance, may occur from blood loss. Bleeding in the brain can lead to localized loss of neurological function and seizures. Bleeding in the urinary tract will lead to blood in the urine.
